"Fo Guang Shan" What's that you ask?

Updated: May 23, 2023

We wondered too! Twelve curious Spokes went to find out. We were greeted by our friendly guide who arrived from Sweden 35 years ago. He was immediately drawn to the Temple site and watched as it was built on Guildford Road in Maylands,

then became involved and now is a volunteer there doing what he can to assist. The first hour he told us about himself, and then about Buddhism - it's history and about the Temple itself and the Buddhas at the front and what they represent.

Down a flight of stairs to the Library where a calligraphy and folding lotus class followed. We were shown a short video about the beautiful lotus flower. Historically this flower has many meanings but in general is seen as a symbol of purity, spiritual enlightenment and rebirth. Using a square of soft tissue we folded away, carefully following instructions and a demonstration, and at the end had a finely crafted lotus flower!! Next we were shown how to write in Chinese calligraphy Three Acts of Goodness - Do Good Deeds, Speak Good Words and Think Good Thoughts". You can see by the photos the concentration and enjoyment people experienced during this process.

We were ready for lunch by 12.00 so adjourned to the dining room where we saw the food blessed then partook of a tasty vegetarian meal. There were some unfamiliar flavours but generally enjoyed by all.

Asked whether we enjoyed the experience people said "very interesting", "something very different", "very calm and relaxing".
